IT& ICT PROJECT

APDA in collaboration with NWL Online has set up an ICT Centre to provide Internet and computer education to elderly and disabled Asian people. Computer centre is equipped with 12 computers, accessible equipment, software, high-speed internet connection, “ADSL” which is commonly known as Broadband, an Outreach trainer and accessible furniture.

The purpose of ICT centre is to develop computing skills of the people using the APDA Centres, their carers and their families. This will not always be through formal classes but can be through informal learning, or learning by completing tasks. At present the centre has registered around 85 users for computer classes.

Disabled users of this project are mainly first generation elderly and disabled Asian people, their Carers and their family members. Many of the first generation elderly and disabled people are keen but hesitant to learn ICT skills. The project will work to give this group of people confidence, and support them to learn and enjoy computers and the benefits, which can be accrued.

This project is targeted at excluded groups and individuals and is being delivered by APDA’s ICT Centre. The Centre concentrate on introductory learning and training. The centre is offering innovative ICT services to socially excluded groups.

The ICT users are mainly people with disabilities including people with learning difficulties, their carers and family members and others. At present the users are provided training on keyboard skills, touch typing, surfing the web, sending and receiving emails, web search, word processing, worksheets, databases (MS Access) etc.

People with age related disabilities and people with learning difficulties have shown a lot of interest in learning this latest technology. Some of the service users are very keen in surfing the web and reading newspapers in Asian languages.

Almost all the service users have not used computer before in their lives, but as soon as they developed the interest of learning ICT skills, they can operate computers independently.  People with learning difficulties have also shown a great deal of interest in learning keyboard skills. Few users can surf the web quite independently.
